Red Memory 20:09

about

A rare album available online for the 1st time. These 2 pieces were commissioned in 2004/5 for 2 different projects, one being Fabrizio Modenese Palumbo for an event in Torino 2004 - and the other for the Artspace Stairwell Project commissioned by Rachel Shearer A.K.A. Lovely Midget. he work is a process which we created these two pieces - each with a single sound source, in this case of Red Memory - a historic horse race commentary, which was processed through guitar effects and re-amplified and recorded in the large stairwell of the Artspace gallery in Auckland, New Zealand, resulting in an acousmatic sound experience which could be considered a counterpart to my album 'all cracked medias' as I employed similar processes. It was later re-used as a soundtrack to the Et Al. Collective's Film 'Popular Productions'.

At this point in time I was interested in using found sound as a source and employing some of the techniques that had been used but Alvin Lucier, and the massing of sound methods used by Phill Niblock.

The piece 'Auditions' is a collaboration with Valerio Tricoli, who worked with me in realizing this piece which was initially commissioned for said event in Torino Italy, but went on to be played in festivals Athens, Australia, The USA and New Zealand.
The concept we worked with was such that the working was 'If Phill Niblock made a piece for for percussion" and we went about making a multi layered drone from a single source, in this case a single hi--hat hit, was was then built into a spectral drone through multiplication of up to 48 channels - each sample being a slighting different length of loop, resulting in a mass of doppler effect. When played over a loud system, either in stereo or multi-speaker playback, the variation on volume affects the overtones, in that what you are hearing is not actually there, it is a generative clashing of overtones and ghost harmonics.

Our research and concept at the time was into the methods deployed by Phill Niblock, Maryanne Amacher, Bernard Parmegiani, Terry Fox, Xenakis and others who's work activates a space through triggering acoustic phenomenon when diffused.

The piece was included in a 2004 exhibition 'Everyday Minimalism' at the Auckland City Art Gallery, and the only sound work involved in an exhibition alongside works that draw on a minimalist aesthetic, but pollute or complicate it with everyday references including visual and intermedia artists John Armleder, Hany Armanious, Mladen Bizumic, Stella Brennan, Julian Dashper, Mikala Dwyer, Rosalie Gascoigne, Richard Hamilton, Gavin Hipkins, John Nixon, John Reynolds, Ed Ruscha and Ian Scott.

It was also presented at the Australian Electronic Music Conference, IRCAM, and CalArts in diffusion events over the years.

As a sound artwork this piece was acquired by the collection of the Auckland City Art Gallery and has been diffused there on rare occasions, but has never had a commercial public release until now.

We have set a limited edition of 400 Downloads, and all proceeds will go to support the operating costs of Valerio Tricoli and I to pursue our 20+ years of collaboration with a new duo project planed for 2020.

It is suggested to use Hi Fi speakers or monitors, advised to use a Sub woofer or an ambient' (third) speaker system -at a relatively high volume to experience the full effect, but it can also be played quietly as an ambient bed.
We invite artists to sample or use this as raw material, or to include it in diffusion events with notification in advance.

Thanks for reading,

Dean Roberts +Valerio Tricoli.
